Day Three - Hanauma Bay and Lanikai
Hector and I headed to Hanauma Bay early in the morning to avoid the crowds and get a head start on the day. Upon arrival we had to watch a short video about the history and preservation of Hanauma Bay. Hanauma Bay is a natural pool that formed in a volcanic crater and is home to many different types of fish species (just in case you were wondering).
Hector and I love to snorkel because it provides you a glimpse into the underwater world. We enjoyed swimming alongside the bright, tropical fish and corral at Hanauma Bay. The corral formed little mazes and pathways to swim through, it was a blast. We were hoping to see a sea turtle or two, but didn't see any while snorkeling. Once on shore though, we noticed a sea turtle in the sand. According to a lifeguard, the turtle was practicing its nesting skills.
After Hanauma Bay, we headed over to Zippy's for lunch. Zippy's is Hawaii's version of Denny's, but offers a much wider range of menu. For example, my lunch consisted of a garden salad, grilled cheese sandwich, sushi, and a coconut naples. Random, I know, but I've never had a meal quite hit the spot like this one did.
After lunch, we drove to Kailua and did the Lanikai Pillbox hike. It was a short, steep hike that offered beautiful views of Lanikai Beach and The Mokes. After hiking, we stopped by Lanikai Beach for some swimming and sunbathing. If you are looking for an uncrowded beach with warm turquoise water and fine powdered sand, this is the beach for you! It is tucked back in a residential area, away from the crowded streets and beaches of Honolulu. The next time we go back to Oahu, we will definitely stay in Lanikai.
